A
crucial Windows Mobile operating
system upgrade has been released that all our users should consider installing before
March 11, 2007. With the new energy laws going into effect this
year, Daylight Savings Time (DST) is now starting earlier and ending
later. That means DST now starts on the second Sunday in March and
ends on the first Sunday in November. Previously it began on the
first Sunday in April and ended on the last Sunday in October.
The problem is that after the DST dates change on this Sunday,
March 11, 2007, Windows Mobile devices can't update their clocks for
the affected time zones correctly without a software update. What's
more, your Windows Mobile device might not display correct time zone
information for certain time periods during the year, and that may
cause you to sync incorrect data to your Mac. You could be one hour
early or late for your appointments. Anyone doing business in North America should
apply a patch to make sure your Pocket PC will make the switch on
the correct date.
So you're probably asking yourself...
How do I start this process?
Pre-Requisites
-
PocketMac Software:
-
PocketMac Lite or Pro
-
PocketMac Phone Edition
-
Windows Mobile Device:
Microsoft has recently issued a patch for DST (Daylight Savings
Time). This patch is required to be installed on Windows Mobile 2003 powered devices. According to Microsoft, this
patch is not required for Windows Mobile 2002 and older.
Where can I find additional information on this patch?
Microsoft has provided a web
page here. (This page may not load the first time you
click the link. If you get a blank page or an error, please refresh
your browser.)
How do I find my Pocket PC or Smartphone OS?
-
From the handheld, tap the 'Start' menu.
-
Towards the bottom of the menu, select 'Settings'.
-
After the Settings window opens, select the tab at the bottom
for 'System'.
-
Tap 'About'. This utility will display the OS version number.
Version numbers beginning with 4.xx or 5.xx require this patch.
How do I install the patch
from Microsoft?
-
Click
here and select the appropriate patch for your device. This
will download the .cab file installer package.
-
When the download has completed successfully launch
PocketMac if it is currently not running.
-
Plug in your device and allow time for your PDA icon
screen to turn white.
-
Click the PDA icon in the top menu bar near the clock, and
select 'Install new software via…' the select 'CAB file' from
the side menu.
-
A Finder window will pop up asking you to select the file to
install. Navigate to where you downloaded the patch .cab file
(on Desktop by default) and select it. Then click 'Open'.
-
PocketMac will now install the .cab file. This should happen
very quickly and you should briefly notice a message pop up on
your device. This indicates that the patch was installed.
-
Your device should automatically soft-reset after the patch is
installed, but it may not. If it does not, that is okay. Perform
a manual soft reset, usually done with the tip of the stylus in
a reset hole on the back or bottom of the device.
-
If you are unsure that the patch was successfully installed,
repeat steps 2 - 6. If it was installed successfully, you will
get a message on the device screen indicating so.
Thank
you so much for your enthusiasm and support!
